Interest in horse riding has increased during the corona

February 23rd, 2022 | By: Joakim Krassman

Umeå Ryttarförening has always had long queues for both beginners and adult groups. But since the pandemic hit Sweden, they feel that more people want to start riding.

Umeå Riders' Association has a long and exciting history

The background to the start of the association was the old cavalry at the military barracks K4. After a decision on horse dismounting in 1963, the association was renamed Umeå Ridsportförening and a few years later (1967) Umeå Ryttarförening, URF, was founded. Although the association is no longer part of K4, older military personnel still come to ride, and sometimes outings are organised for the comrades' association Blå Dragonerna (an association for those who have completed hunter training in Arvidsjaur or Umeå).

The business was moved in 1999 and a new facility was built a few kilometres outside the centre of Umeå. The architecture and ideas for the appearance of the facility came from Helsingborgs Ridklubb. Today the association has about 900 members, which means that they are one of the larger associations in Sweden. A wide range of activities from riding school, to competition in several disciplines such as dressage, jumping, driving and vaulting.

Setbacks for the business

Since the corona pandemic swept through Sweden, Umeå's Riders' Association has experienced an increase in interest in riding and longer queues to start riding. With extremely bad timing last year, one of the riding halls was taken out of operation due to impact during inspection of the roof. Therefore, Umeå Ryttarförening has had to focus on maintaining activities on outdoor courses and in a smaller riding hall. A sad decision that has meant that the development of the business has stopped and several competitions and events have had to be cancelled.

It is sad to be affected by this just when interest in riding has increased, we obviously want to be able to offer everyone who wants to ride a place in our association, says Anna Nenzén.

At the moment the riding school has 47 horses, 25 big horses and 22 ponies. In addition to these, there are about 67 stalls for private horses. In total, Umeå Ryttarförening has about 600 sessions a week. But of course they hope to increase this as soon as the facility is restored.

Umeå Equestrian Association users of Academy

With Hippocrates' business system for riding schools, Umeå Ryttarförening got a better queuing system and a better overview of its activities.

Hippocrates Academy has facilitated our work in the business and is user-friendly for our customers. As we are a large association, the system change started intensively, but as soon as all the students and horses were in place, the work became so much easier, says Anna Nenzén.

Thanks to the system change, Umeå Ryttarförening has reduced its telephone time, has a smoother cash flow and has also been able to provide better support for its students. Their favourite feature is the SMS function, which has made it easier to send reminders and requests to students this autumn.
